Water Heater Blanket

Are water heater blankets helpful for saving energy/money?

Amy,

Thank you for listening. We appreciate you.

Conventional water heaters heat and store water so it is “standing by” -¬†waiting to be needed. As the tank gives up its heat to the surrounding air, the unit is “told” to re-heat the water, but the wasted energy is referred to as “standby loss”.

One of the easiest ways to immediately see energy savings is to insulate a water heater tank.

Knock Knock, Who’s There? My Water Heater!

I hear a knocking noise coming from my water heater. What does that mean?

Jackie,

Thank you for your question.

That knocking noise your water heater makes is likely a sign that the bottom of the tank is coated with minerals like calcium.

The burner is below the bottom and as the materials warm up you will hear “pops” from air pockets in the minerals.

This usually starts to occur when the anode rod in the tank disolves and is no longer functional in keeping ..read more

Dip Tube on Water Heater

How can I obtain a copper dip tube for my water heater?

Steve,

Thanks for a great question – we appreciate you.

The dip tube is the tube that brings fresh, cold water in to the heater.

It is generally made of a plastic – although there was a time a few years ago when the plastic disintegrated and caused some issues.

Why are you thinking you want it made of copper? Some have heard of the horror stories of the cheap plastic tubes that ..read more

Re-Circulating Pump on Water Heater Humming

I keep hearing a humming noise from our re-circulating pump – what’s going on?

Laura,

Thank you for listening – we appreciate you.

You had a re-circulating pump installed on your water heater to create a stream of heated water to the point of use in the house.

This system loops back to the water heater to keep a steady supply of warm/hot water in the loop for whenever you demand it – a true “instant” hot water system.

It may be that the pump ..read more

Quality Water Heater

Can you suggest a good quality water heater?

Stephanie,

Thank you for your kind words and congratulations on the money saving repair!

What is the “best” water heater? There are many good units available and most can be had from a good plumbing company. You want a unit that is insulated and has a quick enough recovery to handle your use demands.

Also keep in that water quality has a major impact on the life of water heaters.

This is not a typical DIY project ..read more

Question: You guys have helped me in the past, and I enjoy your show. I have a water heater that is about 25 years old. I know it probably should be changed out but would like to have it last as long as possible. There is a long copper? tube that runs down the side of the tank. It is draining about 1-2 cups of water a day (I have had to put a bowl under it). This ..read more
