Earwig Problem

Help! We just purchased our home and have found it to be infested with earwigs.

Jo,

Thank you for listening to the Inside Outside Guys – we appreciate you.

An earwig infestation is not a pleasant thing to deal with – although the old myth that these insects actually take up residence in our ears has been proven false.

It is most common to see these critters in homes that are slab-on-grade construction where there is not crawl space or basement and they are ..read more

Spiders in the House

Ew! I think we have a black footed spider nest somewhere in our house, or else they just like us. We find at least 2 (usually more) every day in our home, and one time in a cup! Is there any way to get rid of these little intruders safely? Please help!

Nikki,

Thanks for listening – we do appreciate you!

The Black-Footed spider you mention is a small, pale yellow critter found in gardens and houses. It actually has dark brown feet ..read more

Mouse in the House

Why do I have so many mice around my home and how can I get rid of them?

We hate to be so blunt, but mice only live where there’s a good food source and places to nest.

What you really need to do is deep clean, vacuum and wipe down places like cupboards and food pantries.

Once the deep cleaning is done get some peppermint plants and some peppermint oil. Mice and all other rodents hate peppermint. We like using peppermint because ..read more

Hornets in My House

I have hornets (or yellow jackets) on the outside, getting inside my house through a small hole where the aluminum siding butts up against the chimney.

George,

Thank you. We can understand your dilemma. It sounds as though you have correctly figured out where the wasps are getting in.

A lot of homeowners are experiencing similar issues – especially with older homes that offer a lot of small gaps and cracks as entrance points for insects and other critters. As the outside air gets ..read more

Bats in the Belfry

How can I be assured that a “critter company” will get the job done?

David,

Thanks for the inquiry.

Bats in the belfry – or in your case the attic – would be a good thing if they didn’t multiply and mess up the area – particularly by defecating on your insulation. Such critters can literally contaminate a space very quickly, so getting them out fast and keeping them out is important.

Part of the service you should be purchasing should include the pest ..read more

Go Away Spiders!

How can I keep spiders away from and out of my home?

David,

Thank you so much for the great comments and for being a long time listener – we very much appreciate you.

How to keep spiders away from the house?

Tough thing to be 100% effective with, but there are some ways we can minimize the intrusion.

Like any critter, the best way to get rid of them is to get rid of their food, so using things that are effective against spider “food” ..read more

Help! I have ground squirrels in my walls and don’t know what to do!

Mary,

Thanks for listening – we appreciate you!

You have a nest of ground squirrels that have found a way in to your old farm house through cracks in the foundation.

If you don’t feel you can afford a pest control company, you may consider live traps, apet cat or a product called Tanglefoot.

One live trap that is locally available at most big box stores is called Hav-a-Hart. It is ..read more

Kim,

Thanks for being part of the show – we appreciate you!

You have a concern about your crawl space – particularly that there may be “critters” living down there!

Residential crawl spaces are not inspected by any group or government extension once a home is occupied, so it up the homeowner to regularly look at the space and make certain things are as they should be.

If you looking to have a professional inspect the space regarding issues typical to a foundation/crawl, we ..read more

Controlling Pantry Moths

Greg,

Thank you for being part of the show – we sincerely appreciate you guys!

Pantry moths are an insideous pest that can be very difficult to control.

They eat through containers to get to the foods they love – a lot of carbs like cornmeal, oatmeal, starch, cereals, etc.

They like remote, dark corners and recesses and their sole purpose in life seems to be reproduction on a grand level with the female laying up to 400 eggs at a time.
